    Kyrgyzstan is the most populous of the four Central Asian states, with an estimated population of 6.2 million people in 2010. The Kyrgyz population is largely concentrated in the south and east of the country, with most of the remainder living in the north. The majority of the Kyrgyz are ethnic Kyrgyz, followed by Uzbeks, Kazakhs, and Russians. There are also significant numbers of Ukrainians, Belarusians, Tatars, Uyghurs, and Germans in the country.

    The country is a secular state with a predominantly Muslim population. Islam was introduced to the area in the 11th century and has been a major force in Kyrgyz life ever since. The majority of Kyrgyz are Sunni Muslims, but there are also significant numbers of Shi'a Muslims and Ahmadis. The state religion is Islam, but it does not play a significant role in day-to-day life.
