(CE/AD 1517-1648) The Reformation personality type is ESTJ, "the loyal and responsible executive". In the wake of the Reformation, the Reformation's character traits were transformed into the modern traits of "loyalty", "dependability" and "organization". These personality types are still seen in Protestant countries as the leaders of the Lutheran churches in Germany or the Anglican church in England. These personality types were created out of an attitude of "loyalty" and "dependability". Loyalty was a principle that was emphasized by Protestants, but it was not the same as loyalty to God. Loyalty to the Church meant loyalty to the Pope and the hierarchy of bishops that were appointed by the Pope. This is explained in part by the fact that the Catholic Church was a far more powerful organization than the Protestant churches and as such it was easier to "loyalty" to it than to God. In many ways, then, Protestants have been loyal to the church rather than to God.
In addition to being loyal to the hierarchy and authority of the Church, Protestants also felt that they should be loyal to each other. The Protestant churches were almost always congregational churches. Each church functioned as an independent unit governed by its own rules and laws.
