History
The Draugr were originally called the Draugr Marauders, and they were a group of bandits that roamed Skyrim during the Fourth Era. Their leader was a necromancer named Ulfric Stormcloak, who ruled Skyrim during the War of the Dragons.[1] By the time the Empire of Tamriel had conquered Skyrim, many Draugr had been slain by the Dragonborn. However, a few survived and were hidden away by Ulfric and his followers.[2] After the defeat of Alduin, many Draugr fled Skyrim to escape from the civil war that erupted between Ulfric's supporters and those who supported the Empire. Some Draugr were slain by other humanoids as they fled to Skyrim from other places as well as their own lands. In Skyrim, the Draugr were hunted relentlessly by the Imperial Legion and the Dragonborn.[3]
The draugr or draug (Old Norse: draugr, plural draugar; modern Icelandic: draugur, Faroese: dreygur and Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian: draug) is an undead creature from Norse mythology, also called aptrganga or aptrgangr, literally "again-walker" (Icelandic: afturganga). Draugar live in their graves, often guarding treasure buried with them in their burial mound. They are animated corpses with a corporeal body, unlike ghosts, with similar physical abilities as in life. Draugar possess superhuman strength, can increase their size at will, and carry the unmistakable stench of decay.
