He dwells in the depths of the ocean, which he has divided into two parts, his realm of Nidhöggr and his realm of Níðhöggr. There is a story that Jörmungandr was born from the flesh of the woman Angrboða, and that this flesh now exists as a part of his body. When he was born, his mother cut off his head and gave it to Nár, but Nár tricked her and swallowed it. His head grew into a dragon's head and his body into a dragon's body and he was able to change into a giant serpent.
In Norse mythology, Jörmungandr (Old Norse: Jǫrmungandr, pronounced [ˈjɔrmunˌɡandr̥], meaning "huge monster"), also known as the Midgard (World) Serpent (Old Norse: Miðgarðsormr), is a sea serpent, the middle child of the giantess Angrboða and Loki. According to the Prose Edda, Odin took Loki's three children by Angrboða—the wolf Fenrir, Hel, and Jörmungandr—and tossed Jörmungandr into the great ocean that encircles Midgard. The serpent grew so large that it was able to surround the earth and grasp its own tail.
