    The island of Hashima, also called Gunkanjima, a name that means Battleship Island and is due to the shape that Hashima acquired when it was walled to protect it from the strong waves of the sea and the typhoons that used to hit it.

    This island, four hundred and eighty meters long and one hundred and fifty meters wide, is located about twenty kilometers from the port of Nagasaki and between 1887 and 1974 it was inhabited by the workers of its coal mine and their families.

    At one time this was the most densely populated island on Earth. 5,000 workers lived on this tiny island, a mining facility. The concrete buildings today are crumbling because they have been abandoned since 1974.

    On July 5, 2015, the mine was included in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO within the group of "Sites of the industrial revolution of the Meiji era in Japan: steel, shipbuilding and coal mining."
