He got away with his madness because he was a young man and he was charismatic, but after he died, the Targaryens lost their power and were completely cut off from the Iron Throne. The last Targaryen king, Maegor, was murdered and the Targaryens were stripped of their titles and lands.
They were all exiled to Essos, where they lived in poverty and were treated like second-class citizens. Aerys II didn’t want to leave Westeros and he wanted to be buried there. He believed he was the rightful king and he demanded to be buried in the crypts of Winterfell, which Snow took away from him.
For six years, Aerys II was imprisoned in the Red Keep in King’s Landing and when Viserys Targaryen came to visit him in prison, he tried to burn the entire castle down. He broke out of his cell and set fire to the Red Keep, but when he reached the throne room, he was killed by Jaime Lannister with a crossbow.
