To the extent that any of this is true, it is no surprise that Myers-Briggs is so popular with therapists and counselors. As David Keirsey notes in Please Understand Me, "Myers and Briggs, and latterly Keirsey, have offered a detailed and precise way of describing and analyzing human character. Their method has been very beneficial for helping people understand themselves better and others better." Myers and Briggs, Keirsey notes, "are the only inventors of correspondences between psychological types and Jung's cardinal functions."
There are problems, however, with the Myers-Briggs system. For one thing, the letters assigned to each of the four categories, or quadrants, are arbitrary. The letters do not reflect any actual qualities of personality or behavior so much as they represent the "direction" in which a person is inclined to respond to the environment: ENFJ vs. INTP (Extroverted Intuitive), for example.
