Masvidal was born to Mexican parents in Orange County, California. He grew up in the South Central area of Los Angeles, where he attended Thomas Jefferson High School, graduating in 1988. He then attended Los Angeles Harbor College before transferring to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice.
Masvidal began his mixed martial arts career in 1995, fighting mostly in the California based Gladiator Challenge promotion. He won seven of his first seven fights in Gladiator Challenge, but lost his first fight for the UFC on November 19, 2003 to Joe Riggs; Riggs knocked Masvidal out with a knee strike.
