He was born into a poor family living in what is now the city of Kyoto in Japan, but at the time was part of the old province of Ise in Japan. Jigoro Hakamichi was the son of a woodcarver named Hachiro Hakamichi, but his father died when he was young.
At age fourteen, Jigoro Hakamichi left home to work in Tokyo. He was employed in a bank for several years, and then he became a clerk for a shipping company. After that, he joined the Tokyo Fire Department.
However, after the Meiji Restoration of 1868, when Japan became a modern nation, Jigoro Hakamichi decided to become an entrepreneur.
