    Eshaq Jahangiri’s appearance in American politics is no accident. His father, Gholam Hossein Karroubi, is the former chairman of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), a coalition of opposition groups in Iran. Eshaq Karroubi was elected to the NCRI’s politburo in March 2007. In March 2009 the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center reported that a group of NCRI activists were arrested in Iran and imprisoned on charges of being members of a terrorist organization.

    In the summer of 2009 the Obama administration began a new dialogue with Iran’s leaders, which led to a series of meetings between the two governments. It was during these meetings that the idea of a Qanooni-mehr was discussed.

    Eshaq Jahangiri Kouhshahi is an Iranian politician who served as the sixth first vice president from 2013 until 2021 at Hassan Rouhani's government. Jahangiri was the minister of industries and mines from 1997 to 2005 under President Mohammad Khatami. Before that, he was the governor of Isfahan Province. He was also a member of Parliament for two terms.
