Kim, the first Korean to lead the American charge in the war, was born in South Korea to a military family. She moved to the United States at age 5, and grew up in New Jersey.
Kim joined the Army National Guard right out of high school, and she eventually went on to earn two master’s degrees. She took an unusual path to the Army leadership roles, often being passed over for positions.
Her journey was far from traditional.
At first, Kim was turned down for a commander position because she was too young. Then, the Army sent her to Europe for two years after she graduated from college. After that stint, she became an officer in the National Guard, which is not part of the Army.
She only joined the Army only after she had several children.
Kim was named to her current position in September, becoming the first woman to lead the Army’s National Guard since the position was created in 1933.
