The autonomic nervous system regulates everything that we do automatically. How we breathe, how we blink, and how we digest our food are all examples of things that we do without having to think about it. The autonomic nervous system is split into two branches: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system works like a gas pedal and is responsible for things such as breathing and heart rate.
