    Teach was born in Virginia in 1718 and he is believed to have been in the British navy during the French and Indian War. He is best known for his exploits in the American Revolutionary War, especially for capturing Fort Royal, which he did twice; the second time with the assistance of his young nephew Edward Cornwallis (1738-1799).

    Teach is known for his piratical raids on the coast of the Carolinas and Georgia and his raids on New York City. Teach led a band of pirates known as the Blackbeard Pirates which included Benjamin Hornigold, Calico Jack Rackham and Mary Read (the female pirate). Teach and Hornigold were the only ones to escape with their lives.
