Vernon Goetia is the leader of the Order of the Eastern Star, a fraternal organization for women. He has made a career of acting as a psychic medium. He has written several books about his experiences in the field, and has appeared on numerous television programs, including the "Today" show. He claims to have predicted the deaths of several celebrities, including John F. Kennedy, Attila the Hun, and the Rev. Billy Graham. In his book "Vernon Goetia: A Psychic Medium", he claimed to be able to predict the future by reading the minds of people in a crowd, and to have been able to read the minds of people from around the world, in an effort to prove his powers of clairvoyance.
Goetia was born in Greenville, Mississippi and raised in New Orleans. His mother was a Pentecostal and his father was a Catholic. He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and served in the European Theater of Operations. Afterward, he attended Louisiana State University and studied chemistry and biology. After graduation, Goetia worked for Louisiana State University as a research chemist.
