Wu Zetian was born in 624 AD in Taining. Her father was a local official, but her mother was of noble lineage. When she was still very young, her father died, and her mother remarried. Her stepfather was an official of the powerful imperial family of the Tang Dynasty. She called him “the Old Master”, and she was allowed to live in the palace. Her mother died when she was only nine years old.
As a child, she had a deep interest in books, and she often read aloud to her stepfather. He was impressed with her intellectual ability. She also studied with her stepfather’s daughter, who was an accomplished poet and calligrapher. The daughter taught her writing and calligraphy.
When she was 20 years old she married the Prefect of Linjiang County, and she inherited his office when he died. As the wife of the prefect, she worked as a lady-in-waiting to Empress Wu Zetian, and played an important role in the political and cultural life of the capital.
