She is often depicted alongside a fox, which is an important symbol in Japanese folklore. This is due to the legend that she gave birth to a kitsune when she ate food that was prepared by a kitsune.
She is also known as the “fox fairy”, “fox god”, “fox mother” and “fox of the wind”.
