When he got to college he probably began to assert himself more and felt like he was in a better position to make friends and be social because of his intelligence and drive. He probably became more popular and assertive and felt like he was in his element. He probably had a lot of friends but probably didn't trust them completely because of his past experiences. When he was at college he probably felt he was in control of his life, while most other people were still being controlled by their parents, teachers, other people, their past experiences, etc. It's possible he thought he could have power over other people instead of actually being controlled by them, which is why he may have become so aggressive in Metis.
