Lorenzo de' Medici (1449-1492)
Lorenzo de' Medici (1449-1492), the third son of Cosimo de' Medici and Lucrezia Tornabuoni, was born in Florence. He helped to found the Order of the Knights of St. Stephen, a military order that became the Order of the Knights of Malta, and was a patron of artists such as Botticelli and Fra Angelico.
In 1478 he married Maria Sforza, the daughter of Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, and became Duke of Milan after his father-in-law's death in 1482. He was a very skilled military commander, and his military campaigns included a successful siege of Naples in 1482. By the time he died in 1492, he ruled over a very large territory, including Milan, Florence, and part of Tuscany. He is known for his patronage of art and architecture, including his own building projects.
