I first met Wen Ruohan in the summer of 2003. At that time, he was a graduate student at the University of Toronto, and we were both working on a research project on the general problem of artificial intelligence. We met initially because he had published a paper with me, and I had published a paper with him. We had also both been involved in the development of the so-called “plastic brain” project, which was designed to generate a brain-like computational system (a “neural network”) and then subject it to an appropriate range of environments and task scenarios. Both of us were hired by one of the Canadian government agencies to continue this work.
Eventually we started to talk about artificial intelligence more generally, and we realized we had a few things in common, such as our interest in the emergence of human-level intelligent behavior from relatively simple computational systems.
