    Carl Spitzweg

Franz Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885) was a German painter and draftsman of the late Romantic and Biedermeier periods. He only began to devote himself intensively to painting after completing his studies in pharmacy. The oeuvre created since 1836 includes about 1,700 paintings, drawings, watercolors and drafts for humorous sheets. Spitzweg's "Der arme Poet", whose protagonist has gone down in history as a synonym for the Romantic artist, is famous. His picturesque small towns without traces of modernity, his light-flooded landscapes with few figures, the quiet, Biedermeier interiors or his tongue-in-cheek analyses of human failures exude a touch of nostalgia - and remind us that the "good old days" were also just a utopia. Today, Carl Spitzweg is one of the leading German artists of the 19th century and one of the best known of the Munich School of Painting.
