Frederic Remington was an American artist who created many paintings and drawings of the American west. He was born on May 4, 1867. He later moved to New York City where he studied art and developed a reputation as a painter. After moving to New York, Remington began to develop a unique style of painting the American West, depicting it as it would have looked at that time. His first major success was with a series of paintings on the American Civil War. A number of his works, including some of those on the war, were controversial as they portrayed the war as a struggle between the north and the south for racial equality. In 1916, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his series on the American Civil War. In 1919, Remington began to suffer from mental illness and died on March 15, 1921.
Frederic Sackrider Remington (October 4, 1861 – December 26, 1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor and writer who specialized in depictions of the American Old West. A member of the second generation of Hudson River School artists, Remington's works are known for depicting the Western United States in the last quarter of the 19th-century, featuring such images as cowboys, American Indians, and the U.S. Cavalry [1]
