About
Georges Braque was a French painter and draftsman. Braque is considered to be one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century. His entire artistic career was dedicated to "breaking up the tradition" and to finding new ways to paint and express his ideas. He aimed to create a completely new language and a universal painting language that would be both sensuous and logical.
His best known work is "Le Violon d'Ingres" (1912), which depicts a young woman standing, holding a violin. The painting had a huge influence on 20th century art, being seen as an example of Cubism, or Abstract Expressionism.
Georges Braque (/brɑːk/; French: [bʁak]; 13 May 1882 – 31 August 1963) was a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His most important contributions to the history of art were in his alliance with Fauvism from 1905, and the role he played in the development of Cubism. Braque's work between 1908 and 1912 is closely associated with that of his colleague Pablo Picasso. Their respective Cubist works were indistinguishable for many years, yet the quiet nature of Braque was partially eclipsed by the fame and notoriety of Picasso.
