    Duchamp’s work was important in the development of conceptual art, and he was an important figure of the Dada movement. In addition to being an artist, Duchamp worked as an intellectual critic and chess player.

    In 1881, his father, Émile Duchamp-Villon, was working as a decorator who moonlighted as a violinist. His mother, Suzanne Grimaud, came from a family of engineers. They both were from modest backgrounds.

    In the summer of 1881, the family moved to a château in Nogent-sur-Seine. Marcel’s sister, Suzanne, was born there two years later. In 1884, the Duchamps moved back to Paris, where he attended the Cours Hattemer, a private school for boys that emphasized the humanities and Latin.

    Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp (French: [maʁsɛl dyʃɑ̃]; 28 July 1887 – 2 October 1968) was a French, naturalized American painter, sculptor, chess player and writer whose work is associated with Cubism, conceptual art and Dada, although he was careful about his use of the term Dada and was not directly associated with Dada groups.
