Paul Gauguin personality type is ISFP, or “The Artist”. The artist-idealist shares the same basic personality traits as other artists, but he also has a very different life philosophy than other artists. His life philosophy is based around three main principles:

Gauguin’s first principle was that of individualism. He believed that an artist should work to further his own personal creative processes and that art should be an expression of the artist’s true self. Gauguin wrote, “I want to express myself. I want to be myself. I want to give myself completely to my work. I want to be my own master.”
Gauguin’s second principle was that of Humanism. Humanism is the belief that art is not simply an expression of the artist, but rather an expression of the human experience, which is what art touches upon. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia, and most of his paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
