The first thing he needed to do was to identify the thoughts and emotions that were causing him to behave in this manner.
He needed to become aware of his anger and frustration, as well as identify what triggered these emotions.
Once these emotions were identified, he could then work with these emotions to see what was happening with the thoughts that were triggering these feelings.
In order to do this, he needed to be able to observe himself without being distracted by what was happening around him.

The people are constantly reminded of this by the slogan "Big Brother is watching you": a maxim that is ubiquitously on display.
