The connection is that people's preferences are largely determined by their strengths and weaknesses. When you're not well-developed in a certain area, it tends to be that that area is less important to you than other areas. Which means that if you're not very well-developed in an area it probably won't be high on your list of things you want to spend your time on, and if you are well-developed in an area it probably will be high on your list of things you want to spend your time on.
But what about the other way around? Do you think that someone can be well-developed in, say, music or art, but still not enjoy them as much as other activities?
That's another common misconception, though it's one that I don't think is accurate.
