His teleportations come from a genetic mutation that causes him to have a blue glow around his body and emit a howl of pain. He can also induce his own teleportation by concentrating, resulting in the creation of a blue mist that allows him to travel from one place to another.

Kurt was orphaned as a child and raised by foster parents Charles and Doris Wagner, who were good people and loved him, though Kurt’s mutant powers made them uneasy. When he was a teenager, he began going out at night and stealing from local stores. He had a difficult adolescence due to his abilities and a bad home life.

At age 19, Kurt began working as a mercenary for hire. Although he stole food and money from those he worked for, he never killed anyone. Kurt got into a fight with a gangster named Bolivar Trask, who used his mutant powers to kill the man Kurt was hired to kill.
