American Commander John J. Adams wanted to be a pilot and learned to fly in the Navy, which he joined in 1956. He was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in 1963, with assignments in Germany and then in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Air Force in 1974.

Adams and his wife moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he and his wife became involved with the local Volunteer Fire Department, teaching them how to use fire trucks and fire extinguishers. They started a program in which they brought their students to the fires, giving them a hands-on education they would never get at school.
In 1980, Commander John J. Adams became a firefighter with the Nashville Fire Department. He was elected Fire Chief in 1985 and fought to have the Fire Department adopt a person-to-person approach to firefighter training. In 1991, he was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief, where he continued to work on reducing paperwork and saving money.
