Charles-Valentin Alkan (born, 15 August 1788; died, 4 September 1871) was a French organist and composer. He was the son of the musician Jean-Philippe Rameau.
Alkan's life was full of tragedy. His father died in 1793 when he was eight years old, leaving him in the care of his mother, Marie-Thérèse Rameau. She arranged for him to be taught music by his uncle, Rameau's cousin Jacques-François Rameau. Alkan's mother died in 1804, never having seen her son settle down to a profession.
Charles-Valentin Alkan (30. November 1813 - 29.March 1888) was a French-Jewish composer and virtuoso pianist. At the height of his fame in the 1830s and 1840s he was, alongside his friends and colleagues Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, among the leading pianists in Paris, a city in which he spent virtually his entire life.
