Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born in Italy in 1532. He was an Italian composer, keyboard player, organist, singer, and conductor, who is known primarily for his religious music, which was very popular in his time. He also wrote operas and cantatas, and was the first to use the word “aria” to describe a musical piece.
Pergolesi began composing at the age of seven. His father was the court organist in Bologna, which inspired him to become an organist as well. When he was fifteen, Pergolesi moved to Naples to study at the Conservatorio dei Paggiari. He didn’t finish his studies there, because he had more important things to do.
In 1560, he became an organist in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore in Naples. In 1562, he became a priest. In 1565 he married Anna Maria Velluti. He spent the next seventeen years composing sacred music for church services and also music for the court of Pope Pius IV.
Giovanni Battista Draghi (Italian: [dʒoˈvanni batˈtista ˈdraːɡi]; 4 January 1710 – 16 or 17 March 1736), often referred to as Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (Italian: [perɡoˈleːzi; -eːsi]), was an Italian Baroque composer, violinist and organist. His best-known works include his Stabat Mater and the opera La serva padrona (The Maid Turned Mistress). His compositions include operas and sacred music. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 26.
