I don’t know how many people follow the Fermi Paradox series at The Atlantic, but I do. It’s a series of articles about the idea that the universe is teeming with intelligent life, but we have no evidence of it. What I find interesting is the argument that this is the best possible outcome. We could have 1 billion, or even a trillion, civilizations in the universe. But none of them are aware of each other, and our own civilization is a small blip on a tiny map of the universe.
It strikes me as something of an anti-Copernican moment, where we’re trying to figure out if we’re special or if we’re just one of many. The whole thing seems like a setup for a very bad joke, but it’s not one I like to make.
