Steely Dan personality type is INTP, which is the most common type among jazz musicians. ENFP is also common here, but rare. My theory is that jazz musicians are more likely to be ENFPs because jazz is all about expression, and ENFPs are the most expressive of all the SJ types.

Of course, you can make up your own mind about exactly what makes a jazz musician a jazz musician, and there are plenty of people who will disagree with me. But I’m pretty confident that jazz musicians are more likely to be ENFPs than they are to be INTJs. That doesn’t mean that jazz musicians can’t also be INTJs, but it does mean that most specifically jazz musicians probably aren’t INTJs.

I’m not trying to say that jazz is an INTP-dominated music form (although I’m sure it is). I’m just trying to make a point about how stereotypes about personality types can be wrong.

The last thing I want to talk about is that there are some personality types which don’t really fit into any of the categories we’ve looked at so far.

Steely Dan is an American rock band founded in 1971 by core members Walter Becker (guitars, bass, backing vocals) and Donald Fagen (keyboards, lead vocals). Blending elements of rock, jazz, latin music, R&B, blues and sophisticated studio production with cryptic and ironic lyrics, the band enjoyed critical and commercial success starting from the early 1970s until breaking up in 1981. Initially the band had a core lineup, but in 1974, Becker and Fagen retired the band from live performances altogether to become a studio-only band, opting to record with a revolving cast of session musicians. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies".

After the group disbanded in 1981, Becker and Fagen were less active throughout most of the next decade, though a cult following remained devoted to the group.
