    How were scales developed?

    Valkenburg et al developed scales for the Big Five personality traits using a group of American and Dutch students (1,000). These students completed the Big Five Inventory (BFI) and the NEO-PI-R. The BFI consists of 20 items measuring each of the five traits (extraversion, agreeableness, openness to experience, conscientiousness and neuroticism). The NEO-PI-R consists of 160 items and measures the five traits and several other personality characteristics (called NEO factors).

    Valkenburg et al’s scales were developed based on the convergent and discriminant validity of the BFI and NEO-PI-R. Convergent validity is defined as the degree to which two or more tests share the same construct. Discriminant validity is defined as the degree to which one test discriminates between groups who differ on a trait or set of traits.
