After studying philosophy, theology and literary studies, he taught "Idéhistory" - the historical study of European philosophy - for ten years.
His novel "The Mystery of Cards", published in 1990, made him famous as a writer in Norway and was awarded the "Norwegian Literary Critics' Prize" the following year.
In the same year Jostein Gaarder wrote the novel "Sophie's World". In 1993 - two years later - he achieved an international bestseller with the publication of the book and his breakthrough as a writer.
