There is a difference between assimilation and differentiation. Assimilation involves internalizing the values of the culture in which someone is raised. For example, if you were raised in the U.S. and later move to Japan, you will likely adopt Japanese values. You will also likely adjust your behavior to match the Japanese culture. If you were raised in Japan and later move to the U.S., you would likely adopt American values. You would also likely adjust your behavior to match the American culture.

Differentiation involves outward expression of your internal values. For example, Forrest values freedom, so he will likely express this by sporting T-shirts that say “Free” or by wearing jeans instead of suits. He will also likely express this by looking like he doesn’t care what others think of him. Despite his outward expression, he still cares about what others think.

Forrest is not an extreme example of assimilation because he still has his own identity. The U.S. is still his home, and he still cares about it.

Spyro is an extreme example of differentiation because he has no identity other than being a dragon.

Spyro is a series of platform video games which features the main protagonist Spyro, a dragon. Since the series' introduction in 1998 with the PlayStation game Spyro the Dragon, there have been numerous sequels and a reboot trilogy. Originally published by Sony Computer Entertainment and created by Insomniac Games, the franchise has changed hands and developers numerous times before the rights to the intellectual property were acquired by Activision in 2008. A collection of remakes of the original Spyro PlayStation trilogy called Spyro Reignited Trilogy, developed by Toys for Bob, was released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2018, and later for Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch in September 2019.
