Lawler is the son of renowned Memphis blues pianist, singer and guitarist Jerry Lee Lewis. As a child, Lawler spent most of his time around his father's band, but he never had the opportunity to learn the blues from his father. Lawler said in an interview that his father's band was not a very disciplined band. Lewis later taught Lawler how to play piano and influenced him to become a professional musician. He formed his first band with his friends at his high school and they performed at school dances and talent shows.
