Carl grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida, and as a teenager was a student at the prestigious Miami Beach High School. Carl was recruited to attend Florida A&M University, where he studied marketing and music business. He was inspired by his mother, who worked as a music teacher, and began his career as a DJ at local parties, earning extra money playing music at private parties.
In the early 1980s, Carl began to play the drums and was eventually hired to perform with a band called the Disco 4. The band was signed to a major label, but they ended up being dropped after one album.
Donald Cortez Cornelius was an American television show host and producer who was best known as the creator of the nationally syndicated dance and music show Soul Train, which he hosted from 1971 until 1993. Cornelius sold the show to MadVision Entertainment in 2008.
