Émile Benveniste (pronounced: /bɛ̃venist/) was a French linguist born in Aleppo (Syria) on 27 May 1902, and died in Versailles on 3 October 1976. Born Ezra Benveniste, he was naturalized French in 1924. He distinguished himself through his work both in the field of comparative grammar of Indo-European languages and in that of general linguistics.
