    Fernand Braudel was born in Paris in 1903, the son of a diplomat. He was educated in Paris and Switzerland. He was a classics professor in Paris in the 1930s, and in 1941 became a full professor in the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.

    As a young man he had traveled in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunis. Later he traveled widely in the Middle East, India, China, and Japan. His travels included India in 1932; China in 1938; the USSR in 1953; Indonesia in 1958; Burma in 1959; Malaya in 1960; Laos in 1961; Vietnam in 1963; Cambodia in 1964; Thailand in 1967; Canada in 1967; Tanzania in 1970; Mexico in 1971; Costa Rica in 1972; Brazil, 1973; and Japan in 1974.

    He was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) in 1957. He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1991. He received honorary degrees from Keio University (1972) and the University of Paris (1978).

    He died on 3 October 2007 at the age of 96.

    Fernand Braudel (French: [bʁodɛl]; 24 August 1902 – 27 November 1985) was a French historian and a leader of the Annales School. His scholarship focused on three main projects: The Mediterranean (1923–49, then 1949–66), Civilization and Capitalism (1955–79), and the unfinished Identity of France (1970–85).
