Wettlaufer was an English-language teacher at the Bowmanville School, in the town of Woodstock, Ontario, when she began her killing spree. The school had closed in 2013, but Wettlaufer continued teaching there until February 2014.
On June 6, 2017, Wettlaufer was charged with eight counts of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder for the 1984 deaths of eight elderly residents of Caressant Care long-term care facility in Woodstock. The charges carry a mandatory life sentence with no parole for 25 years.
Wettlaufer began her killing spree in June 2013. She injected insulin into elderly residents in her care at Caressant Care (CC) long-term care facility in Woodstock, Ontario, to deal with the effects of dementia. She would prepare the insulin by diluting it with water, then following the instructions on the vial, which she kept in her purse.
Elizabeth Tracy Mae Wettlaufer (née Elizabeth Mae Parker; born June 10, 1967) is a convicted Canadian serial killer and former registered nurse who confessed to murdering eight senior citizens and attempting to murder six others in Southwestern Ontario between 2007 and 2016. With a total of 14 victims either killed or injured by her actions, she is described as one of the worst serial killers in Canadian history.
