Sheela’s first foray into politics was when she served as an MLA for two consecutive terms from 1983 to 1988. During that time, she served as the chairman of the Madras state committee of the Indian National Congress. Sheela spent 16 years working for the Indian National Congress party before resigning in 2006 to work for the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

In 1986, she pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault for her role in the 1984 Rajneeshee bioterror attack.
