I won't get into this here, but Ni is considered to be the most dominant of the four functions. It is the function which is most strongly tied to the individual (personality) and which is most active in day-to-day life (and thus the most visible). It's the function of emotion and evaluation of events and objects. It's also the function we use for developing and understanding new ideas and solutions. It's the function which is most directly tied to creativity and new ideas and solutions.
Thus Ni is tied to change and creation and rationality and abstract thought. It's also associated with many different types of activities, such as art, music, philosophy, etc.
Ni is often thought to be "cold," "dull," "boring," and "stupid." If you're unfamiliar with Ni, it might seem like a pretty dull and uninteresting function. But if you look at it from a different perspective, one of the things we associate with Ni is curiosity and exploration.
