Mason-Dixon pollster Brad Coker said the Baird campaign was “a textbook case of what to do and how to do it” for a female candidate.

Baird is a former state lawmaker and deputy chief of staff to the lieutenant governor, the daughter of a railroad worker and a mother of three sons. She was working as an analyst at a U.S. Labor Department office when she was appointed as the first woman to serve as counsel to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
She faces a crowded Democratic primary against attorney Robert Thomas and three others.
