As you may have noticed, I’m not a fan of the “born this way” argument. It’s a selfish and ignorant way to justify prejudice and discrimination, even hatred. But I do understand where it comes from. The idea that people can’t help their sexual orientation was, until recently, regarded as accepted fact.
If you have a child, you live with that choice every day; your child has to make the choice whether to be gay, lesbian or bisexual. It’s not about nature versus nurture – it’s about nature versus nurture plus a lot of other factors.
It’s also true that some people are born to be gay. They were born with two X chromosomes; they were born into the wrong family; they were born with a mother who suffered from post-natal depression; they were born with a father who was absent or inattentive; they were born with a father who was an alcoholic; they were born into a home where there was a high incidence of domestic violence.
And then there are the people who are gay because they have gay mothers or gay fathers or both.
