I often tell the story of my first night in London. It was my first night in a foreign country, my first night in a new city, my first night in a new country. I had no friends, nobody to meet up with, and no idea where to go. So I wandered around the streets of London, getting lost several times, and thinking about everything I was experiencing.
When I finally did find myself in a bar, I was amazed. I had never felt like I was in a bar before. It was like a whole new world. I sat down and ordered a drink and the bartender came over.
“What can I get you?” he asked.
I looked at him and said “I want a drink,” and he said “You’re Irish?” and I said “No. What does that have to do with anything?” and he said “Well, we don’t normally serve Irish people here. They tend to be drunk and obnoxious.”
And that was it. That was how I started my night.
Heather Pamela McKay is a retired Australian squash player, who is considered by many to be the greatest female player in the history of the game, and possibly also Australia's greatest-ever sportswoman. She dominated the women's squash game in the 1960s and 1970s, winning 16 consecutive British Open titles from 1962 to 1977, and capturing the inaugural women's World Open title in 1976, while remaining undefeated during that period. She was also a top-level player of other sports, including field hockey and racquetball.
