The Gestalt theory holds that all behavior can be broken down into a limited number of "gestalts." Gestalts are a limited number of basic attitudes and behaviors that people have towards a certain issue. For instance, a person can have a Gestalt of "security," which means that they are more afraid of crime than they are of losing their wallet. Another Gestalt could be "fear," which means that they are more scared of losing their wallet than they are of being robbed. The idea is that there are only a very small number of Gestalts that people will have toward any particular issue, and each Gestalt has an opposite Gestalt. Therefore, you can use the theory to explain why people's attitudes and behaviors toward a certain issue tend to move in direct opposition to each other.
