Also, as a child I was obsessed with the idea of being a scientist. I loved science fiction and science. I made myself a microscope and I studied the way the DNA molecule was created and used it to invent new types of DNA. It’s a little bit like that, at my best.
Q: How did you first become interested in synthetic biology?
A: When I was at school, I actually made a lot of synthetic organisms, but I didn’t actually talk about them much. I have always been interested in biology, but it wasn’t until I was in university that I started getting more serious about it. One of my friends had been reading a book called Genome Man by Karl Sims, which was one of the first books to address what it meant to be synthetic and to address the ethical issues that come along with this. It was a book that really inspired me to start thinking about synthetic biology.
