Pastafarism is originally a parody of religion and a social movement that opposes the teaching of creationism in public schools, whose deity is the Flying Spaghetti Monster created in 2005 by Bobby Henderson, then a student at Oregon State University. Since then, Pastafarianism has been administratively recognized as a religion by some countries, and rejected as such by others.

Writing an open letter protesting the Kansas State Board of Education's decision to allow intelligent design to be taught in science classes on the same basis as evolutionary theory, Henderson professed his belief in a supernatural creator god who would look like a plate of spaghetti and meatballs and asked that pastafarianism be given equal teaching time to intelligent design and evolutionary theory.

The letter quickly becomes an Internet phenomenon. Pastafarian beliefs are presented on Henderson's website (where he describes himself as a "prophet") and in The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
