One of the things that makes him so popular is that he's not just a philosopher. He's a teacher, a monk, and a master painter. He also wrote almost 100 poems and songs, which were compiled into his writings under the title Shōbōgenzō. His poems are often very "funny" (see for example: "After Reading the Old Man's Poem" or "The Very Old Man").
A good example of the Shōbōgenzō style is Dōgen's poem Daiguji, which is usually translated as "Expedition to China". It is about Dōgen's trip to China in 1228 AD.

(But) he arrived without making any preparations, (and) was stuck there for five days.
