A few days ago, I was talking with my friend who, like me, carries around a laptop computer in his backpack. We were comparing notes on our laptops. "Is your battery life any better than mine?" he asked. "The same," I replied. "I've had my ThinkPad X61 for two years already and it's still going strong." "That's great," he said, "but mine's only been two months and it's already giving me trouble." "Mine's still operating well," I noted. "I think you're old." "No way," he said. "Mine's two years old and it's still working great."
There are two things that are very obvious in this exchange. First, the battery life of my ThinkPad is longer than that of his new, high-tech MacBook Pro. Second, the battery in his MacBook is much more likely to fail than the batteries in my ThinkPad.
